Objectives of this study were to evaluate the soil characteristics of Iwanagadai grassland and to get fundamental information for fertilization on the growth of Italian ryegrass. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Soils of Iwanagadai grasland were acid (Average pH: 5.6) and the confficients of phosphate absorption were considerably large (Average value: 1680). Clay content was 43% on an average and dominant clay minerals were AI-chlorite and metahalloysite. 2. Contents of free iron and aluminum oxides in the soils were hight in general. Major part of the forms of phosphate in the soils was Fe-,Al-and organicforms, and the available phosphate as Ca-form scarecely existed. 3. It was found that the effect of fertilization, especially nitrogen and phosphate was significantly large. Grass yield in Iwanagadai grassland increased from 3-4 ton to about 12 ton (Fresh weight)/10a with the increase of fertilizer (N: 40kg, P_2O_5: 40kg, K_2O: 40kg). Furthermore, it was suggested that dolomite was better than calcium hydroxide for liming material. (Received June 30, 1977)
