The purpose of this study was to observe the role of the posterior structure of cervical spine for cervical stability. Twenty-eight Japan white rabbits were the subjects. Eighteen were performed laminectomy as group L, five were performed resection of the posterior muscles and spinous process as group M, five were performed resection of the spinous process. X-P and MRI were taken at regular interval after surgery, and histological studies were done immediately after the rabbit were killed. Instability observed in X-P appeared mostly in the lower cervical spine, especially in group L. And severe kyphosis were observed in group M, and little change in group S. And intervertebral disc degeneration were observed in group L. It was concluded that lanmina and posterior ligaments take charge of stability between vertebral bodies, posterior muscles take charge of dynamic stability.
