Epidemiologic study of alcoholics in a hospital for alcoholics in Ube area

In order to examine the present situation of alcoholics in Ube Area, we submitted to 120 male alcoholics and to 120 male non-alcoholics, a questionnaire dealing with the social background or combined disease. The following results were obtained. 1. Most alcoholics were male, between 40years old and 60years old, who had left high scholl in mid-course, engaged in manual labor, and lost both parents before fifteen years old. 2. Therelationship between family and alcoholics was investigated. In persons under 49 years old, the percentage of alcoholics who belong to large families (no fewer than four brothers) was significantly higher than that of non-alcoholics (p＜0.01). The percentage of alcoholics who belong to small families in two familiy types between alcoholics and non-alcoholics in person above 50 years old. 3. Theaverage age when alcoholics began drinking was 18.8, and the average age when alcoholics began socalled ”problem drunking” was 36.8. 4. In the blood typr ABO system, the precentage of AB type was dignificantly higher in alcoholics than in non-alcoholics (p＜0.05).
