To analyze thr right atrial (RA) function in patients (PTS) with heart disease, both atrial echograms with an esophageal echocardiography and RA pressure by a catheter-tip manometer were recorded sim-ultaneouesly in 20 pts in regular sinus rhythm (control 5, constrictive pericarditis (CPC) 2, congestive 6). RA pressure (P)-dimension (D) curves were composed. Five phase of the instantaneous RA dimensional changes could be identified and the active shortening of RA always followed the systolic rise in RA-P (isodimensional contraction (IC)).
