The patient was a four-month-old male infant. At his age of three months, multiple papules of miliary size began to appear on the head, face and trunk and then gradually increased in size and in number. They were soft, yellowish cutaneous nodules measuring from 3 to 7mm in diameter-at the time of biopsy. However, these papules disappeared spontaneously in an interval of about three months. Microscopically, there were well-circumscribed masses of lipidladen cells of histiocytic series (e. g. foam cells, Touton giant cells), fibroblasts and endothelial cells in the upper dermis. The overlying epidermis was atrophic. Infiltration of inflammatory cells including eosinophils was minimal. The histologic features above described closely resembled those of histiocytoma or of Hand-Schuller-Christian disease. Therefore, it seemed difficult, if not impossible, to differentiate diseases of this group histologically without making reference to their clinical pictures.
